    미국 중고교에서는 어떤 특정과목에서 우수성을 보이는 학생들만이 별도로 수업을 하여 시험을 치르는 제도를 마련해 놓고 있는데 이것을 AP Program 혹은 AP Test라고 한다.
    AP란 각 과목에 대한 우등학급이 구성되어 그 과목에 대해 더 깊게 공부하는 과정 혹은 시험이다.
    이 AP 과목이 많이 개설되어 있는 학교가 우수한 학교며 명문 학교로 볼 수 있다. AP과목이 전혀 개설되어 있지 않는 학교를 비롯하여 많게는 20 여개의 학과를 개설한 학교도 있다.

    대학수준의 외국어, 미적분학(Calculus), 물리, 화학, 외국어 등의 학력을 검사하여서 대학 입학 후 대학의 학점으로 인정해 주는데, 일반적으로 AP 성적이 특정 수준에 이르면, 많은 대학(미국 내에만 1400여개)에서 1학년 과정을 건너뛰고 2학년으로 입학할 수 있도록 하고 있다. 각 과목당 5점 만점으로 4~5점을 받는다면 대학에서 학점을 인정받을
    수 있다. 즉  많은 AP 수강으로 조기 대학 졸업을 할 수가 있다.
    또한 5 점 만점에 3 점 이상이면 약 2500 대학에서 교양 과목의 학점으로 인정해 준다.

     (AP 과목은 16 개 분야에 29개 과목이 있고.  영어에 2 과목, 예술은 3 과목, 화학, 물리, 생물, 컴퓨터, 불어, 
      독어, 스패니쉬, 수학, 음악, 라틴어, 역사, 정치학 등이다)

    College Board에서 관장을 하며 컴퓨터 채점을 받는 객관식(multiple-choice section)과 AP에서 선정한 채점위원단(faculty consultants)이 직접 채점하는 주관식(free-response section)으로 나뉜다. 두가지 점수를 합산하여 다음의 5등급으로 성적이 최종 성적이 나오면 7월경에 성적이 통보된다. 
             (2등급 이상은 대학 입학시 특혜와 학점 이수를 인정받을 수 있다.)
             5등급 - Extremely well qualified
             4등급 - Well qualified
             3등급 - Qualified                                                                       
    AP@TEST
             2등급 - Possibly qualified
             1등급 - No recommendation

    AP 시험은 매년 5월초에 시작하여 약 2 주간에 시행되며 시험 횟수에 대한 제한은 없다.  대학에 성적이 통보될 때는 모든 시험 결과가 (같은 과목을 여러 번 치렀더라도) 통보된다.시험 시간은 총 3시간이 소요되며, 오전 8시에 시작되어 오후 1시에 끝난다.
