Admission Criteria
Demonstrated Academic Readiness
Good grades and DAT scores are important, but they are not everything. The Admission Committee is looking for good students who will also be good practitioners - the applicant needs to be well rounded and possess good interpersonal skills.
There is no particular grade point average to plug in here. Usually, dental schools consider all aspects of your application. However, for most dental schools, the average "competitive" applicant has a cumulative grade point average of above a 3.4. At this point, we don't have any statistical information on Cal student's entry into dental school. The ADEA may give us more specific information for the 2002 application year.
Community Service/Volunteer work
Most dental schools are interested in candidates who have shown a propensity to "give back to the community." Serving the community can prove to be fun, enjoyable, and rewarding, so find an activity that you feel passionate about and go for it!
Clear, demonstrated interest/motivation
You must be able to demonstrate why you want to become a dentist. *hint: the "because I want to help people" phrase is played out. It is important to find out more about the dental profession by taking on an externship, internship or shadowing a dentist.
Leadership
Applicants to dental school need to have demonstrated strong leadership skills. Leadership can be demonstrated in a variety of ways here at Cal or in another community you value.
Communication Skills
Because dentists work in an environment in which they will need to interact with a variety of different people, applicants need to demonstrate that they have good communication skills. Some Cal students have improved their verbal skills by taking a speech class or by filling a role in their community that challenges these skills.
Letters of Recommendation
Letters of recommendation are critical. Letter requirements vary from school to school, but generally three letters of recommendation are required. It also is wise to gather one additional letter from an instructor (preferably in the sciences) as well as another letter from an employer or activity advisor. Some schools may require as many as three science letters.
You can influence the quality of your letters by setting your letter writer up with useful information that will aid in preparing your letter. A copy of your telebears record, your resume, a note requesting the letter that reminds the writer of when you met, how you have interacted and your reflections on that experience. Some letter writers appreciate the guidelines for letter writers provided by the Letter Service. Also include a paragraph about why you know you are ready to be trained as a dentist. Of course, give the forms from the letter service and an addressed stamped envelope, so it is easy for the letter writer to send your completed letter to the right place.
Although the AADSAS central application service has been involved in distributing letters in recent years, you may wish to use the Letter Service so that you have a little more control over the distribution of your letters. Others use the Career Center Letter Service to have the letters on file for five years to aid in gaining access to letters later on in their professional/educational career. If you are relying upon the AADSAS to distribute your letters, it is ideal to all three letters ready to be sent when you want to submit your application (summer before your Junior year). You should take the time to read the
Application Instructions (PDF) for AADSAS to help you decide who should distribute your letters.
The Letter Service will send the AADSAS Letter of Evaluation Matching Form with your packet of letters to AADSAS. This form is found on page 30 of the
AADSAS Application Form (PDF).
The Interview
The interview is typically the last step of the admissions process. The purpose of the interview is to allow the committee to learn more from the applicant and allow the applicant to learn more about the school or college. Typically, a tour of the college's facilities is provided on the day of the interview. The interview day also provides an additional opportunity to ask any questions of either the committee members or the tour guide.
Take time to look at the websites of the School and the clinics associated with it; ask your own dentist if she/he knows someone who is associated with the school interviewing you; network and do your homework. International Association for Dental Research has a list of research areas useful for interview prep.
St. Mary's College of California has a comprehensive list of questions asked recently in dental school interviews. Some students peruse the Dental Students Network to become familiar with terms used and issues to consider. Some students join listserves, such as those on this site, to learn which hot topics are being discussed by dental professionals and students at the time they attend their interview.
