1726년 미국 펜실바니아주의 필라델피아 중심부에 자리 잡은 커디스 음대 (Curtis Institute of Music)는 1924년 Mary Louise Curtis Bok에 의해 문을 열어 오늘 날 이르렀습니다.
이 학교는 최고의 연주자를 위한 학생들의 교육을 위해 학비 전액 장학금이 입학된 학생들에게 주어집니다.
이 학교에서 오픈된 과정은 Diploma, Bachlor of Music, Master of Music, Professional Studies Certificate이며
작곡, 지휘, Keyboard instruments (piano, organ and harpsichord), Orchestral instruments (strings, harp, woodwinds, brass, timpani and percussion), Vocal Studies (성악과 오페라)이 있습니다. 박사 과정은 없습니다.
이 학교는 초중고교 학생들의 예비학교에 다닐 수 있고 고교 졸업 전까지는 Diploma과정으로 다니게 됩니다.
현재는 160여명의 학생들이 16개국의 나라에서 온 학생들과 미국인 학생들과 유명한 교수진들과 함께 공부하고 있습니다. (Richard Danielpour, Roberto Díaz, Mikael Eliasen, Leon Fleisher, Pamela Frank, Gary Graffman, Jennifer Higdon, Ida Kavafian, Seymour Lipkin, Marlena Kleinman Malas, Edgar Meyer, Otto-Werner Mueller, Joan Patenaude-Yarnell, Aaron Rosand, Joseph Silverstein, members of the Guarneri Quartet, and many of the principal players of the Philadelphia Orchestra)현재 미국인 학생 106명, 한국인 16명, 중국인 13명, 캐나다 8명, 대만 5명, 체코 3명, 이스라엘 2명, 일본 2명, 마카오 2명, 그리고 프랑스, 멕시코, 스위스, 호주등에 온 각 1명이 수학하고 있습니다.
커티스는 입학되기가 매우 어렵습니다. 합격률이 3퍼센트 정도라고 합니다. 아마도 1년에 1학년 바이올린은 한 2~3명정도 뽑을 정도입니다. 그리고 영어, SAT등 요구사항도 있고 아마도 미국인 선호 위주 학교입니다.
이 학교는 32 베드룸의 기숙사가 있어서 입학된 첫해의 학생에게 우선권을 주고 있습니다.
