   Statement of purpose, Personal Statement, 
   Letter of Intent, Personal Narrative, etc. 

　

  Personal Statement of Purpose를 쓰는 요령  　


인생에서 인상 깊었던 일을 쓰되, 이것을 통해 자기와 다른 지원자간의 차이점을 강조하고
  심사관에게 어필 할 수 있어야 한다; 본인이 변화하는데 영향을 미친 사건이나 사람에 대해서
  쓰면 좋습니다.

앞으로 전공 할 분야에 관심을 갖게 된 동기나 시기 등을 적습니다.

전공 분야와 관련된 사람들과 함께 한 작업이나, 그들과의 대화를 통해 얻게 된 것들을 적습니다.

학교에서 직업이 이었다면(Research assistant etc.)적고, 또는 직장생활을 통해서 얻은 것
   (지도력,관리기술)은 무엇이며 그것들이 자신의 개인적 성장에 미치는 영향은 무엇인지 적습니다

장래 원하는 직업 이 무엇인지 적습니다.(교수, 연구직, 일반 직장)

인생에서 장애나 고난을 극복한 경험을 적습니다.

이 분야에서 부각되는 개인적 특성(지구력, 통찰력)을 적고 이를 증명할 수 있는 서류가 있으면  
   첨부 합니다.(예: 기사자격증, 컴퓨터 관련 자격증 등)

자신이 어떠한 능력(통솔력, 의사소통능력, 분석력)을 가지고 있는지 씁니다.

다른 지원자에 비해 자신이 지원 학교에 강하게 어필 할 수 있은 점, 입학위원회가 본인에 대해  
    관심을 보일 수 있는 점을 씁니다.

이렇게 씁시다.

blue01_next.gif 57byte자기 소개서나 Essay를 쓸 때는 테마나 주제를 결정한 후 그 방향으로 일관성 있게 씁니다.
   테마나 주제는 자신이 전달하고자 하는 Main Point로서 뚜렷한 목적이 있어야 합니다.

blue01_next.gif 57byteEssay를 쓰기 전에 쓰고자 하는 내용들을 순서대로 나열한 후 글의 흐름을 좋게 맞춘다.

blue01_next.gif 57byte자신이 겪은 경험이나 사실 등을 예로 들면서 적어 나가 되, 자신이 다른 지원자에 비해 뛰어난 점이 
    있다는 것을 뒷받침 할 수 있는 예가 좋습니다.

blue01_next.gif 57byte입학 위원회 심사관들은 당신의 관심사가 무엇인지, 또 당신이 무엇에 흥미를 갖고 있는지를 알고
    싶어 합니다: 즉 어떠한 목표를 가진 어떤 사람인지를..

blue01_next.gif 57byte마무리 부분에서 Essay의 첫 단락(Introduction 부분)을 다시 한 번 명시, 환기시켜 줍니다.

blue01_next.gif 57byte자신의 Essay를 최소한 3 번 정도는 검토, 수정하여야 합니다.

blue01_next.gif 57byte너무 어렵거나 세련된 단어는 가능한 피하고, 간단 명료하게 작성하는 것이 좋습니다.

이런 것은 피합시다.

blue01_next.gif 57byteEssay의 주제에 벗어나는 내용, 주제를 뒷받침하지 않는 내용은 포함시키지 말아야 합니다.

blue01_next.gif 57byte"I was born in..." 또는 "My parents came from..."같은 문장으로 Essay를 시작하는 것은 피합니다

blue01_next.gif 57byte적당한 유머가 섞인 내용은 좋지만 지나치면 좋지 않습니다.

blue01_next.gif 57byte아주 우아한 단어를 많이 쓴다고 해서 심사관들의 마음에 들 수 있는 것은 아닙니다.

blue01_next.gif 57byteSpelling을 정확하게 쓰는 것은 기본입니다. 컴퓨터에 너무 의존하지 말고 꼼꼼히 살펴 보십시오.

blue01_next.gif 57byteGPA나 Test 점수가 나쁘다고 이에 대한 핑계를 쓰는 것은 좋지 않습니다.

blue01_next.gif 57byte너무 평범하고 진부한 내용, 상투적인 표현을 사용하는 것은 피합니다.
Avoid that:　
  • Avoid the "what I did with my life" approach.
  • Avoid the "I've always wanted to be a " approach.
  • Avoid a catalog of achievements. This is only a list of what you have done, and tells nothing about you as a person. Normally, the statement is far more than a resume.
  • Avoid lecturing the reader. For example, you should not write a statement such as "Communication skills are important in this field." Any graduate admissions committee member knows that and is not trying to learn about the field from the applicant. Some statements do ask applicants about their understanding of the field.

Words and phrases to avoid without explanation:

These are some things the statement should do:　
  • It should be objective, yet self-revelatory. Write directly and in a straightforward manner that tells about your experience and what it means to you. Do not use "academese." This is not a research paper for a professor.
  • It should form conclusions that explain the value and meaning of your experience, such as what you learned about yourself and your field, your future goals, and your career plans. Draw your conclusions from the evidence your life provides.
  • It should be specific. Document your conclusions with specific instances, or draw your conclusions as the result of individual experience. See below a list of general words and phrases to avoid using without explanation.
  • It should be an example of careful persuasive writing. Career Center Counselors can help you determine if this is so by reviewing your draft statement.
  • It should get to the point early on and catch the attention of the reader.
  • It often should be limited in length, no more than two pages or less. In some instances it may be longer, depending on the school's instructions.
